Peter Wilson's Stereo video!

A couple of months ago I posted a preview of Peter Wilson's "Stereo" video and it triggered something of a war in the comments. The 90s pop star's new song turned out to be the love-it-or-hate-it jam of the year with some people declaring it a trainwreck, while others praised its retro-tastic PWL sound - courtesy of Dave Ford and Ian Curnow, no less. The video has been out for a while now but it completely passed me by until I saw it on Pop In Stereo a couple of days ago. I asked Peter about the clip and his brutal commentary is not fit to be repeated in public but I think he's being a bit harsh. Low budget Australian videos really know how to plumb the depths of bad taste with style and humour! I love how ridiculously disconnected the clip is to the song. Why not pursue the cute 80s theme? Or just film Peter naked in the shower to make me happy? No. Someone thought the year's gayest pop anthem really needed a gritty video that finds the Melbourne based singer emoting against graffiti in what looks to be an abandoned slum! It's a hot mess but I love "Stereo" and the rest of the album is amazing. There's even a Stock Aitken Waterman track on there. Oh well, until that gets released, brace yourself for one of the year's most... memorable film clips.

Peter Wilson - Stereo

I thought I'd end today's Aus pop special with something suitably fabulous from my friend Peter Wilson. You might remember that he came out of retirement late last year to release a new single called "Intoxicated", which I hailed as being almost as amazing as his Hi-NRG classic "Into The Night". Well, Peter is back with another fantastic retro-dance anthem and it's even better. Produced by PWL associates Dave Ford and Ian Curnow, "Stereo" sounds like a cross between Rick Astley and Mel and Kim. Yes, it's that good! Peter's obsession with all things Stock Aitken Waterman has finally lead to a collaboration with their trusty engineers and their mutual respect for 80s music really shows in the finished product. The song is absolutely adorable and I worship Matt Pop's remix. This is camper than a Kylie concert and deserves some major blog love. If nothing else for the stunning cover. Peter tells me a video is in the works, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, dust off your leg warmers and slip on your cut-off gloves. It's time to party like it's 1988!

German Prostitute Covers Sam Fox!

This blog has been way too classy lately. So instead of featuring yet another international superstar like Beyoncé or La Toya, I thought I'd get back to my trash roots by writing about Germany's latest pop icon. Daniela Katzenberger first came to fame on a reality TV show called "Goodbye Deutschland". The program follows Germans who move abroad to start new lives and Fraulein Katzenberger's dream of opening a cafe in Mallorca riveted the nation. I'm sure her popularity had nothing to do with her Barbie doll looks, plastic tits and penchant for wearing very little clothing. Yeah right. Anyway, someone had the brilliant idea of offering the shy and retiring flower a record deal and for that I'm eternally grateful. Daniela's amazing debut single is a cover of Samantha Fox's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now". Written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, the track was a UK top 10 hit for Sam back in 1987 and has gone on to become a firm fan favourite. Bitches who mess with the Fox usually face my wrath but I'll give Daniela a pass. Her version is almost disturbingly true to the original - with the exception of some much needed autotune - and she camps it up for all she's worth. Fuck Lena, Germany finally has a worthy successor to Blümchen's Queen of Pop throne! "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now" is released on the 27th of August. Pre-order the single from Amazon today!
